To End All Wars Prime Video Movie Review

This film is actually based on real-life events, borrowed from an autobiography by war veteran Ernest Gordon. It goes through different types of approaches in the collective struggle for survival in prison. War films have been popular for several years. The redemptive and Biblical notion of forgiveness distinguishes this film. It is not for the faint of heart as it showcases extreme, gory, direct from real-life war-related violence and non-sexual male nudity and use of foul language.

All this makes it an R-rated movie. To End All Wars movie is based on events that occurred during the First World War, where the prisoners of war were forced to construct a railway line under constant torment, beatings, and lack of survival amenities. The director David Cunningham deserves praise for focusing on different aspects of the event by highlighting the multiple characters. Even the acting is flawless and Kiefer Sutherland and Carlyle have portrayed their characters well enough.

To End All Wars movie Review

There is a strong and emotional attempt to portray the stories of World War I soldiers. The cinematography and screenplay are well presented with the ideal elements for creating a hostile environment for the prisoners to thrive.

The contrast between the Japanese culture which emphasizes submission to the Emperor at any price as a result of being taken as a prisoner and the Western Christian culture of individual growth and sacrifice is noted. Despite themes of sacrifice and mercy, the violence is extreme. Graphic visuals of shooting and execution are there. However, the focus on different themes makes the movie slightly episodic and monotonous.

It can be said that the premise could be something more cohesive for having a stronger emotional impact on the audience. Made on a limited budget, the filmmakers have done a great job in their production.

Conclusion

Just like most war movies, To End All Wars has a didactic significance as it reflects on denouncing the war and prisoner culture where life is gory and difficult. This film is also an advocate of human issues and that is seen in the subtle struggles for the most basic things for the prisoners. It tries to show survival and hope amidst a negative environment and also has the power to forge new connections. It is an excellent movie for war movies and action lovers.
