The Storyline of the Movie Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kadhal
Rambo, who works as both a cab driver and a bodyguard, falls in love with two ladies who have distinct personalities. What tends to happen when he has to come to a decision?
Falling in love with two persons at the same time is not a new concept in Tamil cinema; Rajinikanth and Mohan have done it before. Vignesh Shivan also tackles a similar theme in his novel Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kadhal (కాతువాకుల రెండు కధలు), which is packed with laughter and feelings.
Unfortunately, the approach here prevents you from indeed appreciating the film as it was designed. The plot is highly predictable, and the events appear to occur without any escalating battle.
The film begins with a little child, Ranjankudi Anbarasan Murugesan Boopathy Oohondhiran alias Rambo, abandoning his sick mother feeling that he has a curse on his life and that his very existence may hurt her. After a few years, we see an adult Rambo (Vijay Sethupathi) who works as a cab driver during the day and as a bouncer at nighttime. In each of his lifetimes, he has feelings for Khatija (Samantha) and Kanmani (Nayanthara), two completely different women.
Rambo believes the jinx in his life has been broken when both women propose to him, and he receives everything he desires in quadruple doses. Trouble arises when he is compelled to choose between his two young lovers as reality sets in.
Review of the Movie Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kadhal (కాతువాకుల రెండు కధలు)
Despite the simplicity of the plot, Vignesh Shivan manages to build a different world for the three key characters, each with their own fascinating background stories. As everything appears to be going well at first, the narrative starts to unravel as the film continues. It breaks down into yet another pointless romantic drama and fails to do credit to Vijay Sethupathi (విజయ్ సేతుపతి), Nayanthara, and Samantha’s dynamic duo. What we’re missing here are the real-life difficulties and complexities that come with a three-way relationship.
Only when we feel things are going to get intense does Shivan lightens the mood with a witty remark. Although his approach is appropriate for a romcom, some scenes could have been handled more convincingly for the viewer to relate to.
The scenes of Nayanthara (నయనతారా) caring for her sister and disabled brother and how Sethupathi bonds with them are lovely, and Shivan could have gone deeper into them. Rambo’s travels with both ladies are fascinating, but when their universes converge, the film loses pace and only manages to elicit a few laughs.
Anirudh, the film’s big savior, transforms it into a watchable experience with his foot-tapping tunes and heartfelt soundtrack. Anirudh and Vignesh Shivan, who created a magnificent experience in Naanum Rowdy Thaan, are only able to replicate a portion of it. Despite the shoddy writing, the very presence of Vijay Sethupathi, Nayanthara, and Samantha elevates even the most mundane moments. A single-shot sequence in which Vijay Sethupathi delivers a long monologue once again demonstrates the actor’s ability and how a brilliant actor can make a scene intriguing.
Samantha (సమంత) and Nayanthara have worked successfully together, demonstrating why they are two of the most highly prized actresses in the industry. Sreesanth (శ్రీసాంత్), the cricketer who plays Samantha’s lover, does a good job and succeeds in astonishing in a small role.
