Review of Hocus Pocus 2 Horror Humor of Halloween Night

The sequel is set after a long period and the way films are made today has seen much upgrade. Though it can be considered an unworthy attempt to stretch the film, it somehow gives the same magical vibe with an update on the level of humor. Director Anne Fletcher has done well to bridge the gap between the old and the new fans of this cult film, more because of the long interval between the two parts. What makes Hocus Pocus 2 so intriguing is its star trio: Midler, Parker, and Najimy return to their roles with the same exuberant kookiness that made the first film so popular.

Winnie, Sarah, and Mary have returned, and this time they want to live forever while also becoming the most potent witches in the world. That last want is novel; maybe 30 years of slumber makes world dominance, a common aim of movie villains, more appealing. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy deliver an energetic performance on screen and their chemistry is commendable.

On Halloween night, the sisters slink and slither their way around Salem, delivering jabs and jokes about the quirks of modern life with their typical sharp mouths and quick wit. They still have a passion for evil and a dislike for children, but the film’s desire to soften them dulls their sting. Hocus Pocus 2 stumbles a little more outside the Sanderson dynamic, though not for lack of effort. Gilbert and adult Billy Butcherson have a lovely and hilarious connection that demonstrates the film’s potential for innovation. However, the film’s teen-witch plot is difficult to spruce up. Overall, an entertaining film to watch for old and new sets of fans.

Review of My Best Friend’s Exorcism

The film cannot be exactly called a horror comedy. It focuses on a pair of inseparable friends who are dealing with a tragedy when one of them is possessed by a satanic entity. Though this horror-comedy set in the 1980s takes an old-school method to capture the awful events, the stunts are poor and the humorous shenanigans are monotonous. There’s no motivation to keep engaged when the directors show limited care in properly developing their characters.

Abby’s worst nightmare is losing her best friend Gretchen. Little does she realise that their friendship would be truly tested, and not only because Gretchen is moving during the summer. The two are in their own universe, a late-’80s dreamland of Aqua Net smells, dramatic outfits, and pop star obsessions.

In terms of aesthetics, the film has an artistic flair that utilizes the force of admiration while avoiding over-enhancement. The cinematography is reminiscent of slasher films from the 80s. It also has a retro aspect which is notable and appealing if not sophisticated. 

Perhaps most perplexing is that the two lead actresses are plainly equipped and eager to face many of the story’s uncooked components. Elsie Fisher and Amiah Miller have a pleasant underlying chemistry that is reflected in their on-screen performances. Director Damon Thomas can be questioned for not going into the depth of his movie setting due to the invalid references and unattended focus.

The characters seem strange, but not as much as they would seem unrealistic. Overall, My Best Friend’s Exorcism is a decent film, which can be fun to watch. However, the horror element of the movie seems to be either missing or not doing justice to its genre.
